In the context of the accession the Republic of Latvia (hereinafter Latvia) to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United Mexican States (hereinafter Mexico) and Latvia agree that, as an integral part of the negotiations between Latvia and Mexico, and in light of Section 3 of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (Geographical Indications):
1) Latvia:
a) recognises that for products to be denominated as "tequila" or as "mezcal" such denominations shall be understood as geographical indications of products originated in the territory of Mexico, or a region or locality in that territory, and that such products must have been made in compliance with Mexican laws and standarts; and
b) shall grant the legal protection to geographical indications "tequila" and "mezcal" only with regard to products as defined in paragraph "1(a)";
2) Mexico:
a) recognises that for a products to be denominated as "Rigas melnais balzams", or "Riga Black Balzam", such denominations shall be understood as geographical indications of products originated in the territory of Latvia, or a region or locality in that territory, and that such products must have been made in compliance with Latvian laws and standarts; and
b) shall grant the legal protection in Mexico to geographical indications "Rigas melnais balzams"(‘’Rīga Black Balzam’’) only with regard to products as defined in paragraph "2(a)".
